McLeodganj Travel Guide 2026: Things to Do, Best Treks & How to Get There

By Hill Hikers | Dharamshala’s Trusted Trekking Experts Since 2004

This McLeodganj travel guide is your complete resource for planning the perfect Himalayan escape in 2026. McLeodganj is one of those rare places that gets under your skin the moment you arrive. Prayer flags flutter over narrow lanes. The smell of butter tea drifts out of Tibetan bakeries. And above it all, the jagged white teeth of the Dhauladhar range pierce the sky, daring you to come closer.

Known as “Little Lhasa,” this small hilltop town above Dharamshala has been the home of the Dalai Lama and thousands of Tibetan refugees since 1960. Today it draws backpackers, spiritual seekers, adventure trekkers, and travelers from across India and the world — all looking for something a little different from the usual hill station experience.

Whether it’s your first visit or your fifth, this McLeodganj travel guide covers everything you need — things to do, best treks, how to reach, and local tips straight from our team on the ground.

McLeodganj Travel Guide: What to Know Before You Go

Mcleodganj Famous for?

Location: McLeodganj sits at 1,457 metres (4,780 ft) above sea level, roughly 5 km uphill from Dharamshala town, in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh.

Best time to visit:

  • March to June — Pleasant weather, clear skies, great for trekking. The most popular season.
  • September to November — Post-monsoon, crystal-clear mountain views, ideal for high-altitude treks like Kareri Lake and Indrahar Pass.
  • December to February — Cold and snowy, but magical if you’re after a snow experience. Triund in winter is unforgettable.
  • July to August — Monsoon season. Lush and green, but some high trails close. Lower treks like Triund often stay open.

How many days do you need? Budget 3–5 days for a relaxed visit. If you’re adding a multi-day trek, plan for 5–7 days total.

How to Get to McLeodganj

No McLeodganj travel guide is complete without covering transport. Here are all your options from major cities.

From Delhi (500 km)

By bus (most popular): Overnight buses depart from ISBT Kashmiri Gate and Majnu Ka Tilla daily. Both HRTC (state government) and private operators like Redbus run Volvo AC sleeper buses. Journey time is around 10–13 hours. You’ll arrive in Dharamshala or McLeodganj by morning, ready to explore.

By train + taxi: Take an overnight train from Delhi to Pathankot (around 11 hours), which is the nearest broad-gauge railway station, about 90 km from McLeodganj. From Pathankot, hire a taxi or take a local bus onwards. Book Pathankot trains well in advance, especially on weekends.

By flight: Kangra Airport (Gaggal) is just 20 km from McLeodganj, with daily flights from Delhi (around 1 hour). Taxis from the airport to McLeodganj cost roughly ₹800–1,200. This is the fastest option, though fares can be high.

From Chandigarh (250 km)

Chandigarh is a popular break-journey point. Buses run frequently between Chandigarh and Dharamshala (around 5–6 hours). Taxis and private cabs are also easy to hire. Many travelers from Mumbai and South India fly to Chandigarh and drive up.

From Pathankot (90 km)

The closest major transport hub. Taxis from Pathankot to McLeodganj take about 2.5–3 hours and cost approximately ₹1,500–2,000 for a shared or private cab. Local buses are cheaper but slower.

Getting Around McLeodganj

The town centre is walkable, but the surrounding area is hilly. Options include:

  • Auto-rickshaws and taxis for short local trips
  • Shared cabs between Dharamshala and McLeodganj (₹20–40 per person)
  • Bike or scooter rental — the best way to explore at your own pace

Hill Hikers tip: We offer bike rentals, scooty rentals, and self-drive car hire in Dharamshala. Check our rental options here. Perfect for day trips to Kangra Fort, Bir Billing, or Dalhousie.

Top Things to Do in McLeodganj

Every good McLeodganj travel guide will tell you the town offers far more than just trekking. Here are the must-do experiences.

1. Visit the Tsuglagkhang Complex (Dalai Lama Temple)

The spiritual heart of McLeodganj. The Tsuglagkhang Complex houses the Namgyal Monastery — the largest Tibetan temple outside Tibet — along with the Tibet Museum, the Kalachakra Temple, and the Dalai Lama’s residence. The main temple contains a magnificent statue of Lord Buddha Shakyamuni, surrounded by stunning thangkas and murals.

Entry is free and open to all, regardless of religion. Arrive early in the morning for a quiet, meditative experience. On auspicious days you may even spot the Dalai Lama himself.

Timings: 5 AM – 8 PM | Entry: Free

2. Walk the Bhagsu Nag Temple & Waterfall Trail

Just 2 km from McLeodganj’s main square, Bhagsu Nag is a short, easy walk that packs a lot in. The ancient Shiva temple sits beside a cold mountain stream, and a further 20-minute walk uphill brings you to Bhagsu Waterfall — a beautiful cascade that crashes into a natural pool. The trail passes through the village of Bhagsu, lined with cafes and guesthouses.

Go early to beat the crowds. The waterfall is most dramatic during and just after monsoon season.

3. Stroll Dharamkot & the Triund Trail Start

The tiny village of Dharamkot, a 15-minute walk above McLeodganj, is where the adventure crowd hangs out. Yoga studios, organic cafes, and guesthouses cluster along the lanes. It’s also where the trail to Triund begins — so even if you’re not trekking, it’s a lovely walk up for the views and the vibe.

4. Explore the Tibetan Market & Local Food

McLeodganj’s market stretches along Jogiwara Road and Temple Road, full of Tibetan handicrafts, prayer flags, thangka paintings, singing bowls, and warm woolen shawls. Bargaining is expected and half the fun.

For food, don’t leave without trying:

  • Momos — steamed or fried Tibetan dumplings, best at a roadside stall
  • Thukpa — hearty noodle soup perfect on a cold evening
  • Tibetan butter tea — an acquired taste, but worth a try
  • Siddu — local Himachali bread stuffed with walnut paste
  • Nick’s Italian Kitchen or Jimmy’s Italian Kitchen — McLeodganj’s beloved Italian spots, a quirky local tradition

5. Walk the Kora Circuit

The prayer-flag-draped path around the Tsuglagkhang Complex is called the Kora — a traditional Buddhist circumambulation route. About 1.5 km long, it passes prayer wheels, chortens, and memorials. It’s contemplative, beautiful, and gives you a real sense of the Tibetan community’s daily spiritual life.

6. Take a Yoga or Meditation Class

McLeodganj is one of the best places in India for yoga and meditation, with dozens of centres offering everything from beginner Hatha classes to extended Vipassana retreats. Popular options include Tushita Meditation Centre (famous for its 10-day courses), the Himalayan Iyengar Yoga Centre, and Om Yoga Centre.

7. Day Trip to Kangra Fort

About 25 km from McLeodganj, Kangra Fort is one of the oldest and largest forts in the Himalayas, built by the royal family of Kangra in the 4th century BC. The views over the Kangra Valley from the fort walls are spectacular. Rent a bike or scooty from Hill Hikers and make a half-day of it.

8. Paragliding at Bir Billing

Roughly 70 km from McLeodganj, Bir Billing is considered one of the world’s top paragliding destinations, having hosted the Paragliding World Cup. A tandem flight with a certified pilot is an experience unlike any other. Hill Hikers offers paragliding packages at Bir Billing that include transport, camping, and your flight.

McLeodganj Travel Guide to the Best Treks

This is where McLeodganj truly shines. The Dhauladhar range rises dramatically behind the town, offering trails for every level — from a casual morning hike to a serious multi-day high-altitude expedition.

Triund Trek ⭐ Most Popular

Distance: 9 km (one way) | Altitude: 2,850 m | Difficulty: Easy–Moderate | Duration: 2 Days / 1 Night

The classic McLeodganj trek. The trail begins at Galu Devi Temple near Dharamkot and climbs steadily through oak and rhododendron forest before opening onto the wide meadow of Triund — a ridge with jaw-dropping 270° views of the Dhauladhar peaks on one side and the Kangra Valley on the other.

Camping overnight at Triund, watching the sun set over the mountains and the valley lights twinkle below, is one of those experiences that stays with you.

Note: A trekking permit is now required for Triund. Your Hill Hikers guide handles all permits as part of the package.

Snowline Laka Trek

Distance: 12 km (one way) | Altitude: 3,300 m | Difficulty: Moderate | Duration: 2 Days / 1 Night

The Snowline Trek goes beyond Triund, climbing higher into the Dhauladhar range where snow lingers well into summer. At the snowline camp, you’re surrounded by glaciers and raw Himalayan scenery that most tourists never reach. Spectacular and relatively uncrowded.

Kareri Lake Trek

Distance: 26 km (round trip) | Altitude: 2,934 m | Difficulty: Moderate | Duration: 2 Days / 1 Night

One of the most beautiful treks in Himachal Pradesh, the Kareri Lake Trek takes you to a pristine glacial lake set in a natural bowl beneath the Dhauladhar ridge. The lake is turquoise blue in summer and frozen solid in winter. The trail passes through dense forests, shepherd’s meadows, and small Gaddi villages.

Book with Hill Hikers: Kareri Lake Trek from ₹1,499

Indrahar Pass Trek

Distance: 40 km (round trip) | Altitude: 4,342 m | Difficulty: Challenging | Duration: 3–4 Days

For experienced trekkers, Indrahar Pass is the ultimate Dhauladhar challenge. The trail crosses the main Dhauladhar range at over 4,300 metres, offering views of both the Kangra Valley and the Chamba Valley on the other side. Snow covers the pass for most of the year, and the final ascent is steep and technical.

This trek requires good fitness, the right gear, and an experienced local guide. Our guides have crossed Indrahar Pass hundreds of times.

Kheerganga Trek (from Kasol/Barshani)

Distance: 22 km (round trip) | Altitude: 2,950 m | Difficulty: Easy–Moderate | Duration: 2 Days / 1 Night

A 3-hour drive from McLeodganj brings you to Barshani, the starting point of the Kheerganga Trek — one of the most popular treks in the Parvati Valley. The reward at the top: a natural hot spring pool with mountain views all around. Ideal for first-time trekkers.

Practical Tips from Your McLeodganj Travel Guide

Accommodation: McLeodganj has options for every budget, from ₹400 dorms to ₹5,000+ boutique guesthouses. Bhagsu Road and Jogiwara Road have the highest density of good mid-range options. Book in advance during peak season (April–June and October).

Connectivity: Airtel and Jio have the best coverage in McLeodganj. Be aware that in remote valleys and at high altitude on treks, signals drop out entirely.

ATMs: There are several ATMs in the main bazaar. Carry enough cash before heading to Bhagsu or Dharamkot, as fewer options exist there.

Altitude: At nearly 1,500 m, McLeodganj itself is not high enough to cause altitude sickness. However, if you’re going on high-altitude treks (Kareri, Indrahar, Snowline), acclimatize for at least a day first.

Respect local culture: McLeodganj is a deeply spiritual place. Dress modestly when visiting temples and monasteries. Remove shoes before entering. Photography inside temples requires permission.

Plastic: Himachal Pradesh has banned single-use plastics. Carry a reusable water bottle. Many cafes and guesthouses have filtered water refill stations.
